CASE STUDY 01 · PHILANTHROPIC STRATEGY
Building a Foundation for Inclusive Philanthropy
A 10-Month Strategic Consulting EngagementCommunity Foundation for a Greater Richmond
THE CHALLENGE
A well-resourced community foundation with deep regional roots faced a pivotal moment: how to meaningfully expand its philanthropic reach to better engage African American donors and more equitably serve the communities it existed to support. The strategic intent was clear. The path to get there was not. Leadership needed more than a consultant with ideas — they needed a trusted partner who could move across the entire organization and build shared understanding from the inside out.
THE APPROACH
Robert Dortch and Jordan/Sydnor entered the engagement with one operating principle: transformation is not a memo — it is a movement built through people. Over ten months, Robert worked deeply across governance, operations, finance, marketing and communications, civic engagement, community impact, and philanthropic services. He did not sit above the work — he went inside it.
The process was grounded in research, including insights drawn from the Giving Black Study, and shaped by the real voices of staff, leadership, and stakeholders at every level of the organization. Robert created the conditions for honest dialogue about both the opportunities the Foundation had and the challenges standing in its way. The goal was not alignment for alignment's sake — it was alignment in service of impact.
THE OUTCOME
The engagement produced a clear organizational vision, a comprehensive strategic framework for inclusive philanthropy, and practical cross-functional action plans with defined accountability across every area of the Foundation. Perhaps more significantly, it produced something harder to manufacture and more durable than any document: internal alignment. Staff understood the direction. Leadership owned the plan. The community saw an institution willing to do the work.
"Robert demonstrated professionalism, cultural competency, and a strong ability to build trust in complex environments. He was a true thought partner to Senior Leadership while also making the process accessible and meaningful for staff at all levels."— Sherrie Armstrong, CEO — Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION
If your foundation or philanthropic organization is navigating a strategic inflection point — expanding your mission, deepening community trust, or building an equity-centered culture — this is the kind of engagement that produces lasting results. Not because of a framework on paper, but because of the work that happens in the room.
Jordan/Sydnor partners with philanthropic leaders ready to move from vision to transformation. If that is where you are, let's talk.

CASE STUDY 02 · LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT & FACILITATION
Leading from Every Level:A Government Leadership Retreat
Day-Long Emerging Leaders Retreat — 150 Participants County of Henrico, Virginia
THE CHALLENGE
Henrico County wanted to invest in its next generation of leaders — not with a generic training, but with an experience that would genuinely expand how emerging leaders saw themselves, their roles, and their responsibility to the residents they serve. The 2024 Emerging Leaders Retreat brought together 150 employees from across 34 county agencies: individuals already exceeding expectations, already performing above their pay grade, already demonstrating the character of leaders. They deserved a room designed for their growth, not a PowerPoint presentation.
THE APPROACH
Robert Dortch designed and facilitated a full-day, highly interactive experience built deliberately around Henrico County's Capability Model — the framework the County uses to define and develop leadership excellence across all 34 agencies. This was not an off-the-shelf leadership program. Every element of the day was contextualized to where these leaders work, what they have been called to do, and who they are becoming.
Drawing from the principles of his published book, Adventures in Leadership, Robert wove together leadership development, innovation, change management, and bold decision-making into a single, cohesive arc. His facilitation style — direct, warm, purpose-driven — created space for honest conversation, personal reflection, and courageous thinking. Participants were not passive receivers of content. They were active agents of their own development.
THE OUTCOME
Participants left the retreat motivated, energized, and equipped with tangible strategies to strengthen their leadership and deepen their service to Henrico County residents. The experience inspired a culture of courageous thinking, intentional growth, and accountability — language that is now embedded in how county leaders talk about their own development. The retreat reinforced that leadership development, done well, does not look the same at every level — it resonates at every level.
"Robert L. Dortch brings a rare combination of strategic insight, authenticity, and dynamic facilitation. His ability to translate organizational competencies into practical leadership behaviors resonated strongly with participants at every level." — Monica Smith-Callahan, Deputy County Manager for Community Affairs — County of Henrico
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION
Whether you are leading a government agency, a large nonprofit, or a corporate team, the challenge is the same: how do you invest in your people in a way that actually moves them? Jordan/Sydnor designs and facilitates leadership experiences that meet your organization at its specific moment — aligned to your culture, your language, and your goals.
If you are planning a retreat, a leadership cohort, or a cross-functional development experience and you want it to be more than a good day — you want it to change something — we would welcome the conversation.
