On a Sunny winter afternoon in January, I decided to visit my aunt and uncle. Not long after taking a seat for a brief visit, I was engrossed in the rich tapestry of my family's history, shared by my oldest living uncle, Clarence, affectionately known as Uncle Jake. As we sat in the coziness of the living room, Uncle Jake unfolded stories of our ancestors, a narrative steeped in resilience, faith, and the relentless pursuit of justice. He spoke of Robert and Henrietta Jordan, my paternal great-grandparents, whose lives laid the foundation for the values and legacy my company, Jordan Sydnor, proudly strives to carry forward today. It was a moment of profound realization; I am a living testament to Black History, American History, and African History. This blog, inspired by the spirit of my ancestors and the lessons they've instilled, explores the intricate relationship between innovation and Black History. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the founding force of what has become Black History Month, once remarked, "Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” This quote underscores the importance of preserving and honoring our history to inspire innovation and change. The afternoon with my Uncle Jake brought to light four lessons on the relationship between Black History and innovation that are worth sharing:
Resilience is a Catalyst for Innovation
Black history is a testament to the incredible resilience of the human spirit in the face of systemic adversity. This resilience has not only been about survival but has also been a powerful force for innovation. The stories of our ancestors, like my paternal great-grandparents Robert and Henrietta Jordan (pictured above), who lived by unwavering faith, ingenuity, and commitment to ensure our family's survival and success, serve as prime examples of how overcoming obstacles can lead to new ways of thinking and doing. This legacy teaches us that challenges can be the birthplace of groundbreaking ideas, pushing us to think creatively to navigate and overcome barriers.
Heritage and Values Drive Innovation
The narrative of my family, encapsulated in the afternoon spent with Uncle Jake, illustrates how heritage and values are integral to driving innovation. Jordan Sydnor is more than a name; it's a homage to the principles of hard work, faith, and the protection and continuation of one's legacy. This connection between our past and present innovation strategies underscores the importance of grounding our work in values that transcend time. It's a reminder that true innovation isn't just about technological advancements but about making meaningful contributions that reflect our deepest beliefs and honor those who came before us.
Continuous Innovation Reflects Ongoing History
Black history shows us that innovation is an ongoing journey, not a destination. It's a process that reflects the ever-changing landscape of societal needs and challenges. The story of Jordan Sydnor, inspired by generations past, highlights that our endeavors today are merely the latest chapter in a long history of innovation. This perspective encourages us to view our work as part of a larger narrative, one that is continuously evolving and shaped by the contributions of those who have paved the way for us.
Why Black History Continues to Be Innovative and Matters
The narrative of Black History as a continuum of innovation is vital for understanding the breadth and depth of human achievement. It showcases the ingenuity, creativity, and resilience that have led to significant contributions across various fields despite the barriers of discrimination and inequality. Celebrating this history is essential for fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity in innovation, ensuring we draw upon the most comprehensive range of experiences and ideas in our quest for progress.

Interactive Exercises for Leaders and Their Teams
Innovation Timeline Workshop: Create a timeline highlighting key innovations in Black history and their impact on society and industry. Teams can discuss how these innovations have shaped current practices and brainstorm ways to incorporate similar resilient and transformative approaches into their work.
Values-Based Innovation Challenge: Have teams identify core values from Black history that resonate with their mission. Challenge them to develop new projects or solutions that embody these values, encouraging a deeper connection between their work and the broader historical context of innovation.
Legacy Building Activity: Encourage each team member to reflect on the legacy they wish to leave in their professional field. Drawing inspiration from the stories of Black innovators and leaders, participants can outline projects or initiatives that align with their desired legacy, focusing on social impact and innovation.
As we navigate the complexities of today's world, the lessons of resilience, the importance of heritage, and the ongoing nature of innovation from Black history offer invaluable insights. These stories, like the one shared by my Uncle Jake, are not just about where we come from but about where we are going. They remind us that innovation, at its core, is about people—about honoring the past, engaging with the present, and building for the future. In doing so, we honor the legacy of those like my great grandparents Robert and Henrietta Jordan, not just in name but in spirit, through our contributions to a world that values diversity, embraces history, and fosters innovation. Let us carry forward this legacy, inspired by those whose shoulders we now stand, and continue to make history with every step we take toward innovation.
