On a Sunny winter afternoon in January, I decided to visit my aunt and uncle. Not long after taking a seat for a brief visit, I was engrossed in the rich tapestry of my family's history, shared by my oldest living uncle, Clarence, affectionately known as Uncle Jake. As we sat in the coziness of the living room, Uncle Jake unfolded stories of our ancestors, a narrative steeped in resilience, faith, and the relentless pursuit of justice. He spoke of Robert and Henrietta Jordan, my paternal great-grandparents, whose lives laid the foundation for the values and legacy my company, Jordan Sydnor, proudly strives to carry forward today. It was a moment of profound realization; I am a living testament to Black History, American History, and African History. This blog, inspired by the spirit of my ancestors and the lessons they've instilled, explores the intricate relationship between innovation and Black History. Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the founding force of what has become Black History Month, once remarked, "Those who have no record of what their forebears have accomplished lose the inspiration which comes from the teaching of biography and history.” This quote underscores the importance of preserving and honoring our history to inspire innovation and change. The afternoon with my Uncle Jake brought to light four lessons on the relationship between Black History and innovation that are worth sharing:
Resilience is a Catalyst for Innovation
Black history is a testament to the incredible resilience of the human spirit in the face of systemic adversity. This resilience has not only been about survival but has also been a powerful force for innovation. The stories of our ancestors, like my paternal great-grandparents Robert and Henrietta Jordan (pictured above), who lived by unwavering faith, ingenuity, and commitment to ensure our family's survival and success, serve as prime examples of how overcoming obstacles can lead to new ways of thinking and doing. This legacy teaches us that challenges can be the birthplace of groundbreaking ideas, pushing us to think creatively to navigate and overcome barriers.
